ABET, Inc., is the recognized U.S. accreditor of college and university programs in applied science, computing, engineering, and technology. Accreditation ensures the quality of the postsecondary education students receive.

 

ABET was established in 1932 and is now a federation of 28 professional and technical societies representing the fields of applied science, computing, engineering, and technology.

 

Through the hard work and dedication of more than 1,500 volunteers, ABET currently accredits some 2,700 programs at over 550 colleges and universities nationwide.

ACSM supports the accreditation activities of ABET in a number of ways. One way in which this is done is that ACSM pays fees to ABET each year. One fee is as a member organization of ABET, and an additional fee is paid for each of the accredited programs throughout the U. S. that provide education for surveying/geomatics.

 

Equally important is the efforts of a group of ACSM members who volunteer their time to serve as program observers and evaluators. Each year, they visit selected programs to either provide a critique associated with acceptance for accreditation, or a review for continued accreditation. Some of these volunteers also serve on the various ABET Commissions that are associated with surveying/geomatics programs. The activities of the ACSM volunteers are orchestrated through the Chairperson of the ACSM Curriculum, Accreditation, Registration, and Education Committee (CARE).

 

There is also an ACSM volunteer who sits on the ABET Board of Directors.
